
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe and Dry
If you’re putting infrared heating lamps in a bathroom or a wet room, a simple splash guard isn’t going to cut it. You’re mixing high-voltage electricity with steam and condensation—two things that absolutely hate each other. Moisture is sneaky; it finds every tiny gap in the housing, and once it does, you’ve got a ground fault on your hands.
The reality of the IP55 rating
You’ll see “IP55” on the box, which basically means it can handle dust and a few low-pressure water jets. But in a real bathroom, the real killer is the dew point. Think about it: the heater kicks off, the housing cools down, and suddenly, moisture starts condensing inside the chassis. That’s why we rely on sealed gaskets and specific cable glands. How we actually stop the leaks
To make sure there’s zero leakage, we don’t just hope for the best. We use high-dielectric ceramic supports to hold the heating element. This keeps the quartz tube from shifting and accidentally touching the metal reflector. And please, don’t use standard PVC wiring. It’ll melt. We use silicone-insulated, heat-resistant cables because exposed copper is a disaster waiting to happen. The connection points are usually where things go wrong. We use sealed terminal blocks to stop “tracking”—that annoying process where moisture creates a little conductive path across the insulator. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a warm room and a dangerous one.
A few things to keep in mind
There’s a trade-off here. Because we’re adding these physical barriers to keep water out, the heater might take a few seconds longer to warm up than an open-air lamp. It’s a fair price to pay for safety. Also, make sure your ventilation is actually working. If the room stays too steamy, condensation will build up on the outer lens, and you won’t get nearly as much heat. My best advice? Wire it up with a dedicated leakage current monitor. It’ll catch a breakdown in the insulation long before it becomes a real problem.
