Getting Battery Top Sealing Right with NIR Heating
When you’re sealing the top of a battery, you’re walking a tightrope. If you get too hot, you mess up the cell chemistry. If you don’t hit the temperature, the seal just doesn’t hold. It’s a stressful spot to be in. We’ve spent 15 years obsessing over Near-Infrared (NIR) lamps just to make sure you hit that sweet spot every single time. We stopped using those generic tubes a long time ago and moved to specialized, high-density quartz heaters. The trick is in the heat. We use shortwave NIR because it’s fast. It punches right through the sealing material without heating up the entire battery casing. We push for high wattage-per-centimeter so the seal happens in a blink—literally milliseconds. But here’s a heads-up: keep an eye on your voltage. A sudden spike can fry your filament. To stop the tubes from bowing under all that heat, we use heavy-wall quartz. It keeps the heat profile flat across the whole seal, so you don’t end up with “cold spots.” Making them last on the line Nobody wants to shut down a line for maintenance. That’s why we use a halogen cycle. It keeps the tungsten filament healthy and stops the quartz from turning dark. When the glass stays clear, your heat output stays consistent. Plus, we use standard connectors. If a lamp goes, you just swap it out. They fit right in where the big international brands usually go. Depending on the polymer you’re using, you might need a different absorption peak. We can coat the lamps to shift the spectrum for you. Just keep in mind that a coating blocks a bit of the light. You might need to bump up the power or leave the lamp on a second longer to make up for it. Real-world setup Putting these on a production floor is where things get practical. High-power NIR tubes get hot—really hot. If your cooling fans and heat sinks aren’t up to the task, the ambient temperature will climb, and you’ll drift right out of your thermal window. It’s a headache you don’t want. As long as your electrical grounding is clean, these things are built to take a beating in 24/7 production. They just work.
