
Getting Your PET Preforms Hot Enough (Without Burning Them)
If you’re running a high-speed system like the Husky HyPET, you know that just cranking up the wattage isn’t the answer. If you do that, you’ll just scorch the outside of the plastic while the inside stays cold. The secret is all about the wavelength. You need infrared (IR) heat that actually sinks into the plastic wall. That’s exactly why we built our 400V IR radiators.
Why 400V Actually Matters
Here’s the thing: in a high-speed line, your preform is in the oven for a blink of an eye. You don’t have time for the heat to slowly soak in. By running at 400V, we can push way more power through the quartz. It creates a shortwave IR output that punches straight through to the core of the plastic. It’s fast. Really fast. And it means your bottle walls are heated evenly from the inside out. But a quick heads-up—keep an eye on your power supply. These tubes pull a lot of juice. If your voltage starts jumping around, you’re going to see those annoying inconsistencies in your bottle wall thickness.
The Nitty-Gritty on the Hardware
We use high-purity quartz glass because, frankly, cheap glass burns out too quickly. And we made these as drop-in replacements for Krones-compatible slots. You won’t have to mess around with your brackets or rewire your whole setup. You just pop them in and go. We also spent a lot of time on the connection points. When you’re cycling heat this fast, the metal expands and contracts. If the contacts are loose or get a bit of oxidation, you’ll get arcing at the terminals, and the tube will fail. We’ve tightened that up to make sure they actually last.
Real-World Talk
If you’ve been struggling with “cold cores” in thick-walled preforms, this is for you. Getting that heat deeper into the plastic stops that cloudy, pearlescent look or those white stress marks that ruin a batch. One last thing though. This much heat density puts a lot of pressure on your oven’s cooling fans. Just make sure your airflow can handle the extra output, otherwise, you might end up overheating the oven frame itself.
