
Stop the Burn-outs on your SIG Blomax 4
There is nothing worse than a tube burning out right in the middle of a run. Everything stops. Your OEE tanks. It’s a headache nobody needs. Most of the standard lamps you’ll find just can’t handle the heat cycling or the constant shaking of the blowing process. They weren’t built for the abuse. That’s why we built our replacement lamps differently. We focused on the structural stuff that actually matters so they don’t just snap under pressure. The heat struggle The Blomax 4 needs a very specific heat profile. You need the PET preform hot enough to blow, but not so hot that you scorch the plastic. To keep your cycle times fast, you need high wattage. But here’s the catch: high power density is a bit of a double-edged sword. It gets the job done quickly, but it puts a massive amount of stress on the quartz envelope. If your cooling fans are dusty or just acting up, the lamp overheats. Then, it pops. Simple as that. Built to take a beating We decided to use heavy-wall quartz glass. Why? Because standard lamps tend to bow or warp when things get hot. When a lamp warps, the heat doesn’t hit the preform evenly, and the glass fails way sooner than it should. Our design gives the glass wall a bigger physical footprint. It makes the lamp a simple drop-in replacement that can actually survive a high-vibration environment. Plus, we use high-purity quartz, so the shortwave IR radiation actually gets into the PET instead of bouncing off. Keeping them alive Swapping these out is easy. We used standard connectors, so you aren’t messing around with rewiring your whole system. But if you want them to last, you’ve got to keep the contacts clean. If oxidation builds up at the terminal, you get these little hotspots. Those hotspots eat away at the quartz and kill the lamp early. And do yourself a favor: keep those reflectors polished. If the reflector is dirty, the lamp has to work twice as hard (and run much hotter) to get the preform to the right temperature. That’s a shortcut to a broken tube.
