Can a few new lamps actually save your old blow molder?
If you’re running an older Techne blow molder and your cycle times are dragging, you’re probably feeling the itch to just buy a new machine. It’s a massive expense, and honestly, it’s often overkill. More often than not, the real bottleneck isn’t the machine itself—it’s the oven. If your infrared lamps are worn out or just weren’t built for high speed, your preforms aren’t getting the heat they need. Swapping those out for high-density replacements can completely change how your plastic reacts. The trick is all in the heat density. To speed up production, you have to get that PET preform hot, and you have to do it fast. But there’s a catch: you can’t just blast it, or you’ll end up with pearlescence or a melted neck. It’s a balancing act. We look at the wattage-to-length ratio. By putting a higher wattage lamp in the same space, you’re hitting the plastic with more radiant energy. Just don’t go overboard. If you push the wattage too far without cranking up your conveyor speed, you’ll just burn the preform. About the gear… We use heavy-wall quartz glass because these things take a beating from constant heat cycles. We also use halogen gas fills. It stops the filament from evaporating, which basically means the tubes last a lot longer. The best part? Most Techne machines use standard R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re simple drop-in replacements. No need to rip out the wiring or mess with your sockets. Just pop them in. One thing to watch out for. More power means more waste heat. If you go with a high-wattage upgrade, your oven’s ventilation is going to have to work a lot harder. You’ll probably notice the air around the machine getting warmer. Do yourself a favor and check your cooling fans first. If your airflow is clogged with dust or grime, that extra heat has nowhere to go. Instead of heating your plastic, you’ll be baking your electronics. Get them wired up, tweak your oven zones, and you’ll likely shave a few seconds off every cycle. It’s a small change that makes a huge difference in your daily output.
