
Getting Warm Fast: Why We Use Shortwave Infrared in Bathrooms
There’s nothing worse than stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. You’re dripping wet, there’s a draft coming from the window, and you’re shivering before you even reach for a towel. That’s where shortwave infrared (SWIR) comes in. Most heaters try to warm up the air in the room, but in a drafty bathroom, that warm air just floats away. Our approach is different. These units send heat straight to your skin and the surfaces around you. It’s basically instant. The secret is a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz tube. Once you flip the switch, that filament gets scorching hot and sends out radiation that travels at the speed of light. It doesn’t need to “warm up” the room first. You feel the heat the second you turn it on, even if the rest of the bathroom feels like a walk-in freezer. But bathrooms are tough on gear. Between the steam and the splashes, things tend to break. We use quartz glass for a reason: it handles “thermal shock.” If a stray drop of cold water hits a standard glass lamp while it’s hot, it’ll crack. Quartz just shrugs it off. We also add gold-coated reflectors behind the element. This pushes the heat forward toward you, rather than letting it soak into the wall or the back of your mirror. It keeps the hardware cool and puts the warmth exactly where you actually want it. Now, there are a few things to keep in mind. Infrared is powerful, but it’s focused. You’ll feel a cozy glow right in front of the lamp, but if you step two feet to the left, you’re back in the cold. It’s about creating a “warm zone” rather than heating the whole house. And please, don’t cut corners on the wiring. These lamps pull a lot of power. Cheap connectors can actually melt if they’re pushed too hard, so we stick with heavy-duty terminals to keep things safe. One last tip: if you’re squeezing these into a tight Mirror cavity, give them some breathing room. If they can’t vent, the thermal cutoff will kick in and shut everything down. Give it some space, and it’ll work perfectly.
